Kronos and the Cinderbelt: First-Era Holdings#
Kethra Almanac • Approved 19 September 2026 • drafted 18 September 2026
Status: approved. Briana approved the whole almanac on 19 September 2026 (the Almanac Approval Decision). Where this file calls something a proposal, read it as approved, except the open points that decision lists.
Status before approval.
Canon, decided by Briana today:
- Kronos/Ymir has 15 moons.
- The Vardane Imperium occupies moons around Kronos, which it seized from the Cinderbelt Coalition.
- There are many operations in the Cinderbelt.
See the Kronos Moons and Cinderbelt Operations record. Life in the occupied colony is told in the Kronos colony almanac; the Imperium's side in the Vardane Imperium almanac.
Proposal: everything else below. Briana asked Claude to adjust Kronos and the Cinderbelt to reflect the factions of the first era, the colonial wars. Two open points were decided by Claude on that instruction, and Briana may reverse either:
- (Now canon: Briana confirmed that Vardane seized the moons from the Coalition.) The seizure is placed during the Corridor War, in AL 2284. That date is Claude's proposal.
- The Cinderbelt is crowded with many parties' operations. The Imperium's are the largest after the Coalition's.
See the who's who of the First Colonial War for the factions themselves.
Why these two places matter#
Kethra's economy rests on scarcities (see Chapter VI). Two of them lie off-world:
| Scarcity | Source | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Fusion fuel (helium-3 and deuterium) | The atmosphere of Kronos | Everyone. 44% of the Crown's electricity. |
| Belt metals (nickel-iron, platinum-group metals) and water ice | The Cinderbelt | Every frame, ship and habitat |
The Vardane Imperium already controls the third great scarcity, Oreth's phosphate, and with it the planet's food. Since the Corridor War it has also held Kronos's fuel, and it is pushing into the Cinderbelt. That puts its hand on food, power and metal at once. The other factions fear exactly this, and the first era's conflict grows from it.
Part 1: Kronos (Ymir) and its fifteen moons#
The giant#
| Type | A gas giant of roughly Jupiter's mass |
| Distance from Theia | about 5.2 AU |
| Sunlight | about 4% of what Earth receives. A dim, cold place. |
| Radiation | Intense belts close in, fading with distance. Where people can live is decided by radiation. |
| Distance from Kethra | 4–6 AU, depending on where the two planets are in their orbits. That is 1–3 weeks by torch-ship, and 34–52 minutes each way by signal. |
| Resource | Helium-3 and deuterium, harvested by skimmer craft diving into the upper atmosphere |
Naming convention#
- The four large moons have names in both traditions:
- Capital names are Kronos's family, from Greek myth.
- Frontier names come from the Ymir myth.
- The eleven small moons carry official numbers in the capital's catalogue (Kronos V–XV) and crew names everyone actually uses. Nobody gives a rock the size of a town two mythological names.
- Name check: Hera, Demeter, Hestia and Hades have not been used as major moon names in our own solar system. Kronos's family names that are already used for Saturn's moons, such as Rhea, Tethys, Phoebe and Iapetus, have been avoided.
The four large moons#
The three inner large moons orbit in a 1 : 2 : 4 rhythm, like Io, Europa and Ganymede around Jupiter. Their regular tugging on each other flexes them, and that flexing keeps Hades molten and Hera's hidden ocean liquid.
| # | Capital / frontier name | Distance from Kronos | Orbit | Size (radius) | What it is | Held by (AL 2314) | People |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | Hades / Múspell | 430,000 km | 1.8 days | about 1,800 km | Volcanic. Sulphur plains and lava lakes, deep in the radiation belts. Mined only by machines and rotating crews in shielded bunkers. | Vardane Imperium: automated sulphur and metal extraction, worked by Bonded crews on short rotations | about 2,000 |
| II | Hera / Hvergelmir | 690,000 km | 3.7 days | about 1,550 km | Ice crust over a hidden ocean. Whether anything lives in that ocean is open. | Ilyr Sanctum: the Deepwell research enclave under an Assembly science charter, guarded by a detachment of the Order of the Veiled Sun. Surrounded by Vardane-held moons. | about 9,000 |
| III | Demeter / Bergelmir | 1,100,000 km | 7.5 days | about 2,500 km | The largest moon: ice and rock, with moderate radiation. Ice mining, and fuel processing for the skimmer fleet. | Vardane Imperium: the Skimmer Wing base and the Imperial fuel refineries | about 60,000 |
| IV | Hestia / Auðumbla | 1,900,000 km | 16.9 days | about 2,300 km | Old, dark and cratered, and outside the worst radiation. The only large moon where people can live long-term. | Vardane Imperium, by occupation. Hearthport, the hub of the Kronos system, built by the Cinderbelt Coalition. Seized from the Coalition in AL 2284. | about 280,000 |
Hearthport was founded in AL 2102 by the Cinderbelt Coalition's Kronos Fuel Authority. The Coalition held every Kronos moon until the war. Vesper only carried the fuel onward to Kethra.
- In AL 2284, during the Corridor War, a Vardane naval force took it in a single operation remembered as the Taking of Hearthport. The aim was to cut the Crown's fusion fuel.
- Most of Hearthport's people are still the Coalition crews who were living there when it was taken. They now work under Vardane administration. They call the Imperium "the landlord". The Imperium calls them "residents under protection".
- The name tells you the side:
- Vardane documents call the station Hestia Holding, after the Imperium's word for its provinces.
- Everyone else still calls it Hearthport.
The eleven small moons#
| # | Crew name | Distance | Orbit | Size | Held by | What's there |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| V | Glint | 135,000 km | 7.7 hours | about 40 km | Vardane Imperium | A radiation-hardened sensor picket that watches traffic diving to Kronos. Automated. |
| VI | Chaff | 170,000 km | 11 hours | about 25 km | Unheld | Rubble deep in the radiation belts. Nobody wants it. |
| VII | Grit | 215,000 km | 15 hours | about 15 km | Unheld | The same |
| VIII | Tollgate | 7.4 million km | 130 days | about 60 km | Vardane Imperium | Customs and picket station. Every ship bound for Hearthport is stopped and searched here. |
| IX | Lockyard | 9.8 million km | 198 days, retrograde | about 35 km | Vardane Imperium | Naval anchorage and frame depot for the Kronos garrison |
| X | Holdfast | 11.6 million km | 255 days | about 20 km | Cinderbelt Coalition | A holdout. A Coalition yard crew that refused to leave after the Taking. The Imperium tolerates it for now. Both sides call this "an understanding". |
| XI | Dimlight | 14.1 million km | 342 days, retrograde | about 12 km | Outer Lantern League | A hidden repair yard and fuel cache. The Imperium doesn't officially know about it. |
| XII | Echo | 16.9 million km | 449 days | about 18 km | Vesper Orbital Compact | Relay and traffic-control post. Every signal between Kronos and Kethra passes through Vesper hands, which is the Compact's leverage over everyone. |
| XIII | Quiet | 19.5 million km | 556 days, retrograde | about 9 km | Caldren Crown | Officially an Assembly science station, with Hollin University receivers. Actually a Crown listening post watching the occupation. |
| XIV | Muster | 22.3 million km | 680 days | about 14 km | Free Banner Guild | A staging depot for escort contracts, open to whoever pays |
| XV | Unlisted | 24.0 million km | 760 days, retrograde | about 6 km | Officially no one | Rumoured to be a Black Ledger cache. Ships that go looking tend not to file reports. |
The small moons' orbital periods are given in Earth days. The outer eight are captured rocks on distant, tilted orbits, and several go round the wrong way (retrograde), as captured moons do.
Kronos population (AL 2314)#
Total: about 400,000, matching the almanac figure.
| People | |
|---|---|
| Hestia (Hearthport) | 280,000 |
| Demeter | 60,000 |
| Hera (Deepwell) | 9,000 |
| Hades | 2,000 |
| The eleven small moons together | 49,000 |
About 89% live under Vardane administration: Hestia (280,000), Demeter (60,000), Hades (2,000) and the Imperial small moons (about 14,000), roughly 356,000 people in all. Most of Hearthport's residents are Coalition crews living under occupation.
The fuel under the Armistice#
The Armistice of Saltline (AL 2291) left the occupation in place. In exchange, the Imperium accepted the fuel clauses:
- guaranteed deliveries of helium-3 to the Crown at a fixed price;
- transfer through Vesper;
- inspection by Assembly monitors.
The Crown pays, and resents it. The Coalition wants Hearthport back. Whoever controls the fuel clauses controls the Crown's lights.
Part 2: The Cinderbelt#
The belt#
| Distance | about 50 AU, at the outer edge of Theia's system, where Hyperion's pull kept the rubble from ever forming a planet |
| Signal delay | about 7 hours each way to Kethra |
| Travel | 6–14 weeks by torch-freighter |
| Sunlight | Theia is only a bright star here, so everything runs on fusion power |
| Riches | Nickel-iron, platinum-group metals, water ice. The largest shipyards in the system. |
| Population | about 3.1 million, matching the almanac figure |
Who holds what#
| Holder | People | Main sites | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cinderbelt Coalition | about 1.5 million | Cinder Hollow, the Anvil, and the Coalition yards | The established belt: yard-owners and crews, mostly Cinderborn |
| Vardane Imperium | about 0.9 million | Castellan Rock, and the Imperial Concessions (about 60 mining claims) | Expanding fast. Bonded crews, garrison frames, and debt passed down through families. |
| Outer Lantern League | about 0.5 million | The Wick, and the scattered Lamps | Veterans, holdouts and insurgents. The belt's resistance. |
| Everyone else | about 0.2 million | Scattered | Vesper relay nodes, Free Banner escorts, the Crown's contract office, an Ilyr observatory, independents |
Principal sites#
| Site | Holder | People | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cinder Hollow | Cinderbelt Coalition | about 620,000 | The Coalition capital: a hollowed nickel-iron asteroid 40 km long, spun for 0.3 g. The largest shipyards in the system. Seat of the Council of Yards and the Assembly of Crews. |
| The Anvil | Cinderbelt Coalition | about 180,000 | A refinery ring around a cluster of metal-rich rocks. Every hull in the system has Anvil steel in it. |
| Coalition yards | Cinderbelt Coalition | about 700,000 across about 40 sites | Mining and fabrication rocks, each a company town |
| Castellan Rock | Vardane Imperium | about 240,000 | The Imperium's belt headquarters. A fortified hollowed asteroid and the seat of the Belt Marshal, commanding the concessions and the garrison. |
| The Imperial Concessions | Vardane Imperium | about 660,000 | About 60 mining claims granted by the Council of Corridors and worked by Bonded crews and contract miners. Many many operations, as Briana put it: the Imperium's claims multiply every year. |
| The Wick | Outer Lantern League | about 140,000 | The League's main harbour. Its location is known to everyone and admitted by no one. |
| The Lamps | Outer Lantern League | about 360,000 across about 30 small yards | Dispersed repair yards and settlements. Kill one and the others go dark. |
| The Crown Assay House | Caldren Crown | about 3,000 | The Crown's consulate and contract office at Cinder Hollow. The Crown has no military base in the belt, which is its great weakness there. The Corran Iron Company and the Thessane Works buy through it. |
| Belt Line relay nodes | Vesper Orbital Compact | about 12,000 | The chain of relays carrying every message between the belt and Kethra. |
| Banner Yard | Free Banner Guild | about 8,000 | The escort-contract base. Convoy protection for anyone who can pay. |
| Farlight | Ilyr Sanctum | about 1,500 | A deep-space receiving observatory. Under the Quiet Sky Accord it only listens and never transmits. |
| Ledger's Reach | Rumoured: Black Ledger | unknown | Not on any chart |
| Independents | — | about 175,000 | Free prospectors, hermit rocks, families that belong to no one |
The Seam: the flashpoint#
The Seam is a cluster of about 200 asteroids unusually rich in platinum-group metals. It lies between the Coalition yards and the Imperial Concessions, and both claim it.
- The Coalition holds it by long working.
- The Imperium claims it by Council of Corridors charter.
- Lantern League crews raid both.
- Frame skirmishes happen here every season. The 7-hour delay means Kethra hears of each clash the day after it's over.
Proposal: the Seam is where the first era's colonial war turns hot in space.
Summary: the balance of power off-world, AL 2314#

| Free Banner Guild | Muster depot | Banner Yard |
| Black Ledger | Rumoured (Unlisted) | Rumoured (Ledger's Reach) |
Guidance for AI actors#
- Hearthport or Hestia Holding? The station's name tells you which side the speaker is on, and so does the moon's name: Hestia (capital) or Auðumbla (frontier).
- Kronos is 34–52 minutes away by signal. The belt is 7 hours. Scenes spanning Kethra and the belt run on letters, not calls.
- Vesper hears everything. Every relayed message passes through Compact hands. Characters with secrets use couriers.
- The Seam is where people die. Any belt story can reach it.
- Whether Hera's ocean holds life is open. Don't settle it in a scene.
