City Plan: Hastholm#

Status: approved. Briana approved the city plans on 19 September 2026 (City Plans and Map Styles Approval). Where this page calls something a proposal, read it as approved. The points under What the plan does not settle are being settled on her instruction of the same day.

Status before approval: This street plan is new material, so it waits for Briana's approval (Almanac Approval Decision). That covers every street, its name, and every district and building not marked canon below. What it takes from the approved almanac is cited to file and line (for example 18:96 is the Lesser Crowns almanac, Part 2, line 96), and nothing here overrides canon. The canon puts the city "beneath Hastholm Keep" (18:96) and says little more, so nearly all the detail here is proposal.

Using the plan. Drag to move, and zoom with the mouse wheel, the + and − buttons, or a pinch. Names come in as you zoom, each set lettered to read at the same size on screen:

• Whole city: the Keep, the districts and the villages.
• About 2½ times: main streets, the walls and the great buildings.
• About 6 times: the longer streets and the smaller places.
• About 12 times: the name of nearly every street.

The ⤢ button fills the screen. North is up, and the scale bar bottom left is always true.

The city at a glance#

The districts#

The Keep stands on a crag to the north-north-east of the old town, 70 m above it on a steep face, inside its own curtain wall (proposal). The walled old town lies at the crag's foot, and the city spreads south and west across the upland.

Getting around#

• The Stair Railway (canon): "The Stair Railway (1890s) links all seven capitals. Electrified, not maglev." (18:281) On the plan it crosses the city west to east, with Hastholm Station (proposal) in the New Town. Out on the upland, the plan marks shaleback crossings, where "Railways stop for them." (17:186)
• The Hastholm road (canon name) runs south-west toward Tarn Cross, the "Market town on the Hastholm road" (19:42), and on to Pellmoor.
• The Irondown road (proposal) runs west-south-west to Irondown, the Duchy's largest city and its forges (18:96; 18:100).
• The Kellmoor road (proposal) runs east-south-east toward Kellmoor, the "Ducal market town" (19:36).
• The Wychford road (proposal) runs west toward Wychford, on the Sallow border.
• The Ormsby road (proposal) runs north-west over the uplands toward Ormsby.
• Air. The canon lists no airport at Hastholm; the Duchy's is at Irondown (18:284).

Landmarks#

Canon places are marked canon. Their position on the plan is a proposal unless the text gives it.

How the streets are named (proposal)#

These rules, as Briana set out on 19 September 2026, hold for every city plan:

• streets are often numbered;
• famous people, leaders above all, get streets, and those streets sit together;
• an estate takes a theme, such as flowers;
• many streets keep the name of whoever first laid the road;
• some streets simply stop at a field whose owner never sold, and the suburbs have their cul-de-sacs.

In Hastholm the rules take this form:

• The Dukes' streets fill the walled old town, with House Hast, the Duchy's first house. The reigning Duke has no street.
• Musterside names its streets for soldiering, and the Forges for the anvil, the Duchy's emblem (17:64).
• The New Town is numbered, First Street to Twenty-fourth Street.
• The old lanes keep their founders' names, the upland's family names: Scaife's Lane, Nattrass's Lane, Birkett's Lane, Garnett's Lane, Outhwaite's Lane, Metcalfe's Lane.
• The villages keep their own streets: Cross Lane, Forge End, Fold Street, Stile Lane.
• Estates were built on the fields that sold, each with a theme:
  • the upland (Beck View, Crag Grove, Heath Walk);
  • flowers (Clover Road, Violet Way, Foxglove Drive);
  • trees (Hawthorn Gardens);
  • herbs (Caraway Grove);
  • stones (Agate Gardens);
  • birds (Warbler Drive).
• Fields whose owners never sold are still farmed, with the estates round them.
• Every street longer than 80 m has a name: 4,986 of 5,125.
  • A name is used once in the city.
  • The estates may repeat a name found far off, never within 6 km or in the same locality.
• No towers. Hastholm is "Martial, dutiful, landlocked" (18:103). It keeps the height for its Keep.

The names avoid everything the naming rules and the canon forbid:

• Nothing is taken from Earth's places or history (05:266).
• No new name uses the crowded families: "-gate", "-mere", "-combe", "Salt-", "Grey-" and "Hollow-".
• House Wychwood has no street, so that it is not confused with the town of Wychford.
• Only the road up to the fortress, the Keep Road, carries the word "Keep". In the Crown the Keeps are prisons (03:161), so no other street takes it.

What the plan does not settle#

These are open for Briana; the plan follows the text in each case:

• Settled, 19-20 September 2026. The text called the city "beneath Hastholm Keep" (18:96), but the Atlas marks the Keep 76 km north-north-east — too far to read as literal. That line now reads "in the shadow of Hastholm Keep", which the plan's own choice (following the text's direction, not its distance) already matched.
• The Hastholm road. The canon calls Tarn Cross a "Market town on the Hastholm road" (19:42) without saying where the road runs. Settled: the plan takes it to be the road from the capital south-west toward Tarn Cross.
• The Estates' hall is not named in the canon. Settled: the plan puts the Estates in the old town.

Guidance for AI actors#

• Hastholmers "make the steel and expect to be the ones who stand in the gap." (18:103) The motto is Struck, and Struck Again, the anthem The Duke's March, and the emblem the anvil (17:64).
• The Duke is "Your Grace", and only in Hastholm (18:361). The Duke's Muster, 30 Reaping, brings "Parades at Hastholm Keep" (18:310) and the black pudding of the Estates (18:328).
• A Hastholmer gives an address by district: "the Old Town, Godric Street"; "the New Town, Twelfth Street".
• What is canon, and what is only the plan: the Keep above the city, the Duke's rule, the Estates, the Muster and the shaleback crossings are canon. The crag, the walls, the Muster Field, the districts, the streets and their names, and the exact positions are the plan's proposals.
